Central Region NR 07-010 – May 16 , 2007 London, Ont. – The National Cadet Marksmanship Championship concluded Friday (May 11) at London's Fanshawe College. The annual competition brought together the top 120 sea, army and air cadet marksmen in the country. The competition was especially keen this year with a record 27 targets showing maximum possible score of 100 points. Less than five percentage points separated the top 50 competitors, a strong indication of skill and dedication. Top honours went to the British Columbia team with an aggregate team score of 95.91%. A gold medal went to 2483 Army Cadet Corps, Victoria for the Unit Team competition. Open Individual gold medal winner Nicole Morrison of 2483 Corps scored four perfect targets on her way to a 98.75% average and garnered a second medal as the top scoring army cadet in Canada. Teammate Alex Redden won a bronze medal in the Junior division. New Brunswick's provincial team took the overall silver medal, scoring 95.34%, and the Championship bronze medal went to the Ontario team with 95.21%. Marksmanship is one of the most popular cadet training activities. The Canadian cadet marksmanship program teaches cadets the proper use and safe handling of firearms for recreational purposes with a focus on Olympic-style rifle competition. Cadets earn their way to the National Championship through a rigourous series of tournament matches at the local, region and provincial levels. The Canadian cadet program is Canada's premier youth organization, numbering some 58,000 members nationwide. It is the largest federally funded youth program and operates in partnership between the Canadian Forces and the civilian Navy League, Army Cadet League and Air Cadet League of Canada. Membership is open to both boys and girls aged 12-18. There are no membership fees and uniforms are provided.
