Truly life changing!

January 14, 2020  |  By Robert Gill

A testimonal on the positive impact of the Army Cadet Program.

As the proud parents of this young man, we would like to share our experience with the Cadet program.

At the age of 12, our son, Israel David was encouraged to join our local Cadets. As a military family, we were well aware of the program and all the possible benefits.

You see when Israel was 18 months old, he was given to us, only after did we find out he was on the Autism Spectrum, severe ADD, Fetal Alcohol and Tactile deprived.

Through a village of teachers, specialist, family and friends, we survived and because of Cadets, we thrived.  This quiet, shy young man went from hiding in the stairwell during parade to standing in front and leading classes. The Officers and C.I.s supported and encouraged, never expected less of him than any other Cadet. He helped in Supply and became the Q.M. for 2 years

Officers took him and showed him how to become better. Israel enjoyed the shooting practices and over time earned the Distinguished Marksmanship award, earned, Top Shot, “97%, competed nationally with the Dominion Rifle Association and placed 2nd. He was invited to join the Fulbore program at Connaught. With perseverance, Israel began to stand in front of and teach the younger Cadets. As a Sergeant, the “Commanding Officers Commendation” was presented to him, along with the coin.

For two summers, he was employed at Connaught as laundry supervisor, third summer as Support Staff.

Israel has spent many hrs. volunteering his time with The Legion, The Lions, The Cancer Society and Cadets.

As Israel aged out last year, he receive his 6-year bar and was awarded the “Legion Medal Of Excellence”.

Because Israel took advantage of the Summer School programs offered during his summer employment at Connaught, All the credits he got, gave him more than enough to graduate with full Ontario Diploma.

So Thank you for the amazing opportunity our family had because of the Cadet Program.

Truly life changing!

Jim and Wendy Hallock
