Army Cadet from Québec named recipient for the 2023 Young Citizen’s Foundation Scholarship

June 12, 2023  |  By Robert Gill

OTTAWA, ON (June 12, 2023) – The Army Cadet League of Canada (ACLC) and The Young Citizens Foundation (YCF) congratulate Cadet MWO Ouissam Aitssi from Québec City, QC and member of the 2600 DeRochebelle, Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps, who has recently been named the recipient of the 2023 Young Citizens Foundation (YCF) Scholarship.

As the recipient of this scholarship, Cadet Aitssi will receive $5,000 to help cover tuition costs during his post-secondary medical studies.

In addition to excelling as an Army Cadet, C/MWO Aitssi also demonstrates great confidence and academic achievements. With a penchant for science, Ouissam has won prizes in several math and physics competitions in CEGEP.  His ease for oral expression has also won him prizes in public speaking competitions and poetry contests.  Throughout his studies, Ouissam has volunteered his time to tutor physics and chemistry at the CEGEP he has attended and is involved with the CCIQ (Centre Culturel Islamique de Québec) as a youth activity leader.  Not only does Ouissam excel academically he also fairs quite well athletically having taken part on several occasions in the Pentathlon des neiges at the QC Cadet Games and as a member of the CEGEP fencing club.  He was also captain of his high school swim team. His strong academic and personal skills will enable him to pursue his studies in medicine and undoubtedly open many doors on his path to adulthood and his future.

“The Young Citizens Foundation is proud to partner with The Army Cadet League of Canada in promoting citizenship among Canada’s youth”, says Mr. Gary Bennett, President of The Young Citizens Foundation.   “It is critically important for our collective future that these young Canadians, who have experienced the benefits of participating in the Army Cadet program, further their formal education so that they may have a better opportunity to take on positions of leadership in our future.”

The mission of The Young Citizens Foundation, via the Vancouver Foundation, is to assist young Canadians to grow and mature as committed, knowledgeable and contributing Canadian citizens. The Foundation achieves this objective by encouraging young Canadians to participate in development programs operated by nationally recognized organizations that provide life-learning opportunities for our youth, which will significantly influence and benefit their development as committed Canadian citizens. The Vancouver Foundation grants to hundreds of charities and non-profits in BC every year. Their vision is to create healthy, vibrant, and livable communities, with a focus on supporting projects that address the root causes of important issues. Their funding comes from generous gifts from the community, as well as from managing endowment funds for people, charities, and businesses. https://www.vancouverfoundation.ca/

The Royal Canadian Army Cadets is a federally sponsored program for young Canadians ages 12 to 18 that develops in youth attributes of leadership, good citizenship, and physical fitness, while stimulating interest in the Canadian Armed Forces.

The Army Cadet League of Canada is a civilian, community-based, non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the Royal Canadian Army Cadets. For over 40 years, the League has sponsored Army Cadets corps and solicited public interest for the program, all the while promoting the objectives of the Canadian Cadet Movement.  For more information on the Army Cadet League of Canada, visit www.armycadetleague.ca.
